Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT DOES LIABILITY INSURANCE COVER?
Liability covers Bodily Injury and Property Damage of the other driver.  If you are in an accident and it is your fault, Liability coverage will only pay the other parties damages up to your policy limits.  If you only have Liability coverage and the accident is your fault, your insurance company will NOT pay for damages to your car.  Please see Collision coverage for information on how to cover damage to your automobile.

In the State of Virginia the Minimum Liability Coverage is:
Bodily Injury:  25,000-50,000  ($25,000 per person/ $50,000 total per accident)
Property Damage: 20,000.

In the State of Maryland the Minimum Liability Coverage is:
Bodily Injury:  20,000-40,000  ($20,000 per person/ $40,000 total per accident)
Property Damage: 15,000.

It is always recommended to carry more coverage than the state minimum requirements.  Please speak to your agent to determine the right amount of coverage for you and your family.

WHAT IS COVERED BY UNINSURANCED MOTORIST?
Uninsured motorist is included in basic Liability coverage.  UMBI covers the bodily injuries of you and your passengers and UMPD covers the property damage of your automobile if you are hit by a person that is not insured.

WHAT IS COVERED BY UNDERINSURED MOTORIST?
Similar to Uninsured Motorist, Underinsured Motorist will cover your bodily injuries and property damage if the actual expenses of the accident exceed the Liability limits of coverage of the person that hit you.  Your Underinsured Motorist coverage will only be used after the other insurance has exhausted their coverage.

WHAT ARE DEDUCTIBLES?
The deductible is the portion of a covered loss that is your responsibility. The deductible, when applicable, applies to each covered loss. Typically deductibles are available in the following amounts: $100, $250, $500, or $1000.

For example, if you had a $250 deductible, you would need to pay the first $250 of the covered loss.

Generally speaking, higher deductibles lower your premium, but increase the amount you must pay out of your own pocket if a loss occurs. Ask yourself how much you are able to pay at the time of a loss, in order to save on your monthly premium?

In addition, if you have an auto loan or lease, check with your Bank to determine if there are loan requirements on your deductible.  Typically, the maximum deductible is $500 when you carry a car loan.

WHAT IS COLLISION COVERAGE?
Collision covers your automobile in the event of an accident caused by you or someone driving your car (with your permission).  Accidents are defined as an impact with another vehicle or object (such as a tree or light post).   Your insurance company will inspect the car for damages and determine if the car can be repaired or if it is a total loss.

WHAT IS COMPREHENSIVE COVERAGE?
Comprehensive covers your automobile for things other than collision.  Common coverage's' include: theft, fire, vandalism and glass breakage (i.e. broken windshield not caused by an accident).

WHAT IS COVERED UNDER TRANSPORTATION EXPENSE?
Transportation expense provides you with coverage for a rental car in the event that you are unable to drive your car do to an accident or theft.  This is typically an additional coverage item that you need to request on your policy.  There are policy maximums for rental reimbursement.  Please ask your agent for specific coverage information.

WHAT IS COVERED UNDER MEDICAL PAYMENTS OR PIP?

Medical payments, no-fault or personal injury protection coverage usually pays for the medical expenses of the injured driver and passengers in your car. There may also be coverage if you are injured by a vehicle as a pedestrian.  This is typically an additional coverage item that you need to request on your policy.  Please ask your agent for specific coverage information.

Please note- in the State of Maryland, $2,500 in PIP coverage is required unless you sign a waiver to exclude this on your policy.

WHAT IS AN SR22?
If you are found by the Police or DMV to be driving in the Commonwealth of Virginia without insurance, you may be issued a ticket, fine and/or suspension of your driver and registration privileges.  You may have to pay a $500 statutory fee, a $45 reinstatement fee and filing of proof of insurance for THREE (3) years.  Please contact your local Department of Motor Vehicles for information regarding your state's requirements.
